Step-by-Step Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. If using lean ground beef, add one tablespoon of olive oil to prevent sticking. In the hot skillet, add 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease as needed.
- Add 1 small finely diced yellow onion to the skillet, stirring it into the beef. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and soft. Next, stir in 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
- Reduce the heat to medium and add ¾ cup of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of tomato paste, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard, and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the skillet. Optionally, stir in ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika. Mix everything well, season with salt and pepper to taste, and let it simmer for 5–7 minutes until it thickens.
- While the meat mixture simmers, prepare your buns. Use a skillet or toaster to toast 4 brioche or hamburger buns until they are golden brown. If desired, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise or butter on the cut sides.
- To assemble your sandwiches, optionally place crisp lettuce leaves on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Spoon a generous scoop of the savory Sloppy Joe mixture onto the lettuce. Top with a generous handful of freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese. Cap it off with the top bun and serve your Cheesy Sloppy Joe Sandwiches hot!
