Equipment

  • toaster

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. If using lean ground beef, add one tablespoon of olive oil to prevent sticking. In the hot skillet, add 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease as needed.
  2. Add 1 small finely diced yellow onion to the skillet, stirring it into the beef. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and soft. Next, stir in 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium and add ¾ cup of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of tomato paste, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard, and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the skillet. Optionally, stir in ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika. Mix everything well, season with salt and pepper to taste, and let it simmer for 5–7 minutes until it thickens.
  4. While the meat mixture simmers, prepare your buns. Use a skillet or toaster to toast 4 brioche or hamburger buns until they are golden brown. If desired, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise or butter on the cut sides.
  5. To assemble your sandwiches, optionally place crisp lettuce leaves on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Spoon a generous scoop of the savory Sloppy Joe mixture onto the lettuce. Top with a generous handful of freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese. Cap it off with the top bun and serve your Cheesy Sloppy Joe Sandwiches hot!
