- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with unsalted butter.
- Tear the day-old French bread into bite-sized pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
- In another bowl, whisk together whole milk, granulated sugar, large eggs, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the torn bread pieces and let soak for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- If using, gently fold the raisins into the soaked bread mixture.
- Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and drizzle melted unsalted butter over the top.
- Bake the pudding for 45-50 minutes until set in the center and golden brown on top.
- Allow to cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar just before serving.
